How Do I Store Ink Cartridges?

TIJ Cartridge Storage & Handling Guidelines

What does TIJ mean? TIJ stands for Thermal Inkjet. A TIJ cartridge contains both the ink and the printhead/nozzles that place the ink onto the product. Different SNEED cartridges use different ink formulations, so the best storage conditions depend on the type of ink inside the cartridge.

✅ First: Identify your ink type
Most SNEED TIJ cartridges fall into one of two broad groups:

• 💧 Water-based inks — generally used on porous or absorbent materials such as corrugated cardboard, paper, kraft boxes, and other surfaces that readily absorb ink.
• ⚡ Solvent-based / fast-dry inks — generally used on non-porous or less absorbent materials such as coated cartons, plastics, films, metals, and other surfaces where faster drying is needed.

Water-based inks are typically more forgiving than solvent-based inks, but heat, freezing, evaporation, and poor storage can still reduce cartridge life or cause nozzle problems.

• 🌡️ Temperature: Recommended storage range: 10°C to 30°C (50°F to 86°F). Avoid freezing and prolonged exposure to high heat. Keep cartridges away from direct sunlight and other heat sources.
• 💨 Environment: Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated, non-condensing environment. Avoid excessive humidity and rapid temperature changes.
• 📦 Keep Sealed: Keep unopened cartridges in their original sealed packaging until ready to use.
• ↕️ Orientation: Store nozzle-side up or horizontally with the nozzles facing slightly upward. Avoid prolonged nozzle-down storage unless the ink-specific instructions say otherwise.
• 🔒 After Opening: If a cartridge is opened or removed from the printer, install the original cartridge cap or approved storage clip promptly to reduce nozzle drying.
• 💡 Light Exposure: Store in a dark or low-light environment and away from direct sunlight.
• ⏳ Shelf Life — Unopened: Typical shelf life is 12–24 months from the manufacturing date when stored properly. Product-specific shelf-life or expiration information on the cartridge, product page, or SDS takes precedence.
• ⏳ Shelf Life — After Opening: Use within 2–3 months after opening for best results, unless the cartridge label or ink-specific documentation states otherwise. Reseal immediately when removed from the printer.
• 🔄 Inventory Rotation: Use FIFO (first-in, first-out) rotation so older cartridges are used before newer inventory.

Solvent-based and fast-dry inks evaporate more readily. They therefore require tighter control of temperature, air exposure, and resealing than most water-based cartridges.

• 🌡️ Preferred Storage Temperature: 15°C to 25°C (59°F to 77°F).
• 🌡️ Recommended Storage Range: 5°C to 30°C (41°F to 86°F). Avoid freezing or prolonged exposure above 30°C (86°F).
• 💨 Humidity: Store in a dry, non-condensing environment (~40–60% RH).
• 📦 Keep Sealed: Keep cartridges in their original sealed packaging until use. Once opened, minimize unnecessary air exposure.
• 🔒 Resealing: If removed from the printer, use the original cap, approved storage clip, or airtight cartridge holder as soon as practical.
• ↕️ Orientation: Store nozzle-up or horizontally. Avoid nozzle-down storage unless specifically approved for that ink formulation.
• 💡 Light & Air Exposure: Store away from direct sunlight and minimize air exposure after opening.
• ⏳ Shelf Life — Unopened: Typically 6–12 months from the manufacturing date. Verify the applicable shelf life on the cartridge, product page, or ink-specific documentation.
• ⏳ Shelf Life — After Opening: Use within 2–4 weeks for best print quality unless ink-specific documentation states otherwise. Solvent-based nozzles can dry quickly once exposed.
• ⚠️ Handling: Do not vigorously shake solvent cartridges. For longer printer downtime, remove and reseal the cartridge promptly.
• ⚠️ Safety: Follow the applicable SDS for safe storage, ventilation, handling, and flammability precautions.

A printer’s operating-temperature specification is not the same as the recommended storage temperature for the ink cartridge. A printer may be designed to operate over a wider temperature range than is recommended for storing the ink used in that printer.
